Fablab Boot camp, a success
A group of 14 participants attended the workshop that was organized by ARO Fablab Kenya West.
The participants were very enthusiastic to learn from the Fablab. They all came in the morning around 8.00am and left at 5.00pm while some extended their projects till 9.00pm.

The participants mainly high school graduates interacted on an informal level to discover personal or small
needs which might be fulfilled with relatively simple techniques or products in the Fablab. During the workshop, they were sometimes joined by observers from the vicinity and a group of participants who were on a Change Agent workshop at the center. The few people who came to the lab to over see the participant’s projects were surprised to see how much could be accomplished by addressing small problems using the Fablab computers and the machines.

The workshop participants were very keen in learning about the Fablab and most of them managed to do small projects on their own after instructions from the trainers who were Apondi, Tom and Vigdis.
The participants did projects on micro controller-based circuits, Pico-crickets, laser projects and of course T-shirt projects.

T-shirt project was done quite well. The students learnt basic digital 2D fabrication method. They used a computer drawing program called Corel draw to design and a computer-controlled knife cutter to make the screen mask. Then they printed the shirts and things like handkerchiefs by hand. This was one of the projects that the participants liked most.
The workshop was a success.

To keep up with this growth, a non-profit Fab Foundation, for-profit Fab Fund, and educational Fab Academy are being established.
